I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I have been watching sports (especially football) since I was a little girl. I remember when the Sharks came to San Jose when HP Pavillion was still just The Arena. I don't remember seeing the A's beat the Giants in 1989, but it gets thrown in my face constantly. By A's fans. I remember the glory days of the 49ers (one lived around the corner from me when I was in grade school, and sent my sister and I autographed pictures when we sent a get well card to him) I'm actually sitting here wearing a tshirt from the 1995 Superbowl- you know... when they had winning seasons. Weird right? I have to say my intense love for hockey did not happen until around high school, and then when I lived in L.A. for a year and saw only Kings games on T.V... I missed those Sharks! I would talk about basketball..... but I'm a Lakers fan, and since they know how to win- no need to go there:) But the Warriors are here, and so are the Sac Kings and I read the newspaper so I know what's up. Kind of.
So here I am, 22 and a Bay Area sports fan- how do I live my life without hating the world? Hope. I could talk about just one of the 4 major sports around here, and the story is the same for all of them. Look at the San Jose Sharks just this past year- AMAZING in regular season. Sure, it was rocky there at the end with injuries and what not and the always looming question of PASSION but seriously, how are you going to tell me that someone who hasn't missed a game since joining the team doesn't have passion to win?? Not the point, but the point is that they won the President's Trophy. Can I just say, to a Sharks fan, that banner on their website is just a big fat slap in the face that the Sharks didn't make it all the way. Again. Eliminated in round 1. To the Ducks. I cried. Say it's becaue I'm a girl, or weak, or whatever... but I shed tears when they lost.
So the Pens won the cup, beating Detroit and making Hossa look like a fool (haha!) and it's been a somewhat quiet offseason. Blah. Blah. Blah. Espeically for San Jose. Well, it was- Patty is no longer captain or at least for right now (ughl) and Dany Heatley is running his mouth up in Canada. Oh, I want him on the Sharks- I think he's a great athlete. I was suprised to find out that it wasn't him that ran his mouth, but he sort of did right? I mean, they're men, but they gossip like girls.
It's August and here I am talking about how I can't wait for hockey season to start. Preseason is in September, and I'm already looking forward to watching every game. I have been told to not forget about last year and every year before that, but it's like I forget. It's like I have amnesia. Sports amnesia. I do it with ALL my teams. Even right now, with baseball I'm doing it.
The San Francisco Giants are my favorite baseball team. Hands down, I love them. Forever. I watched the game today against Colorado (were in a race with them for Wildcard and they're ahead by a game. Well, 2 now.) Giants were up 6-1 and the final score was 14-11 Colorado. Ughl. So disappointing and I don't even play for them. I'm already looking forward to the game tomorrow. I have hope that they will win. I was telling a friend of mine that I know they can win. That it was just one game. And I was of course reminded of how they have been all season, and past seasons and that they're a Bay Area team so they can't win.
It's awful. It happens all the time. But my memory fades before the first pitch, before the puck drops, and before kickoff. I get wrapped up in knowing the hope that this time they'll win. This game will be different. That this season will start off right. And that that trade made a difference. (Remember, the Lakers win so I don't have to worry about basketball as much:) I said as much... I know how the Lakers get!)
So here's the question I get asked as a Giants fan- even if make a playoff spot, based on their horrible offense this season, how far can they go? I'm a Bay Area sports fan and the only way to answer that is with hope (I'm just now realizing how girly and mushy and lame all this sounds.) They can go all the way... on a wing and a prayer my teams can win. And they will. One day.
My sports amnesia is kicking in... it's going to be this season!!!! (That's for Giants, 49ers and Sharks)
